For Rules and Play 2019, I worked alongside a r25th to construct a unique, room spanning balloon installation. The Glow Orb was a platform for other developers to create projects for, and several did. The idea was simple – Rules and Play 2019’s theme was a dark room, and so we created a source of light. The project was over 100 LED’s soldered together, mapped with software, and then mounted onto a net that was (in turn) mounted to the gallery rail.
Living Arts and Science Center is based in a historic building, so we were not allowed to have anything heavy mounted to the historic ceilings and with weight as a central design hurdle, I decided to make the structure lightweight (the net) and still capable of diffusing light (the balloons).
Leonard was one of the artists who chose to use the Glow Orb as a platform and created a lovely experience that referenced the Forest Spirits in Studio Ghibli.
The balloons had to be reset every two weeks over the two month run of the exhibition, but the results were worth it.
